Lovely Man

At last another interesting Indonesian movie hits local theater at my place :D.  Reading all the great comments on its posters intrigued me to watch this movie. Bukan, gue enggak lagi bicara tentang poster "Kakek Cangkul" yang di posternya menjelaskan bahwa hantu yang satu itu merupakan suami dari Nenek Gayung. I'm talking about "Lovely Man".
What made me so curious about this movie was the fact that this movie got wonderful reviews at various film festival and American newspaper. In fact, Donny Damara got "Best Actor" at Asian Film Awards for his role in this movie.
from merdeka.com "Donny Damara won award for his role in  Lovely Man"
The Plot
Saiful (Donny Damara) left his wife and daughter, Cahaya (Raihaanun Soeriaatmadja), when Cahaya was just 4 years old. Now, at 19 years old, just graduated from pesantren ( dormitory school which focusing on religious education for Moslems) and now facing trouble she didn't know how to handle it, Cahaya comes to Jakarta. She hopes when she meets Saiful, she can get to know him better and her father can give an answer to he problem.

All her life, Cahaya's been picturing Saiful as an ideal father, masculine and doing a normal job in Jakarta. So  imagined how surprised, confused and disappointed she is when she finds out that her father is a transgender called Ipuy.  If that's not surprising enough Ipuy's job is a street hooker.

Ipuy is as surprised and mad as her daughter. He got enough problem on his plate, like the man whom he stole 30 million rupiahs for his Genital Correction Surgery from is angry and been chasing him. Now, he has to answer all the question from his own daughter about the reason he left his family and living the life he's living.

Ipuy finally decided to acompanny Cahaya in one condition : he only accompanies Cahaya for one day and after that Cahaya can never contact or reconnect  with him anymore.

My Thoughts

I love this movie.

Okay, let's talk about the story first. This movie is like answering my curiosity from Sanubari Jakarta. You know, that comment about how I want to watch a story about a transgender in Jakarta who became transgender because he wants to be and really feel he's in a wrong body. Not only that, this movie can display how the relationship between Ipuy and Cahaya progressing slowly and neatly. It happens in one night, but there's no rush to change their relationship condition. It's one of the reason of whhat makes this film beautiful as it is.

Donny deserves that award. He looks so pretty as a transgender! Also how fierce he acted quite pictured the way transgenders whom I've seen in Jakarta streets. The character is also lovable,at least for me. Ipuy is not ashamed for who he is and what he does. Ipuys even said to Cahaya, his job is also a real job and the money he received from doing it also real money, not monopoly money (haha :D). He does it not because he has to, but because he wants to. He enjoys what he does and who he is. Woohoo, go, Ipuy! XD

Oh, and don't forget about Cahaya. There's a scene at Nasi Padang Restaurant where Cahaya took off her jilbab to make the situation less awkward between her and Ipuy. I mean, wearing a jilbab  is a commitment to cover your body from the outside world. Women can remove it  only when she's with her husband, family, or gal pals in private place. Removing your own jilbab in front of the public is a serious thing and sometimes it can be considered as an inappropriate thing a woman can do. So what Cahaya did was really sweet. It's as if she's willing to do anything so she can get to know her father better.  And as time goes by, she's no longer mad and ashamed about Ipuy anymore, but proudly can say, "Kenapa harus malu? Dia 'kan bapak aku." ("Why should I be ashamed? He's my father.")

As for the film technique, well, I'm not an expert about it. One thing for sure,  Soeriaatmadja  succeed to picture the contradictory things I used to see in Jakarta. There is more to Jakarta than modern city lit by lamps and bright towers.

Conclusion
Alurnya memang agak lambat. However, kalau udah pada terbiasa dengan film Jepang atau Korea yang bertema serius, you'll enjoy this movie as I am.
This is a unique story about father and daughter relationship. It's heartwarming story and succeed to make me laugh and  almost cry, especially at the end of the story (bener deh, akhir filmnya tuh mengharukan buat gue!!! ;) ). There's a message that I love from what Ipuy said in this movie : It's not always about living your life in right or wrong things. We can's just run from the problem because we scared to get hurt by it. Just like a child who likes playing under the pouring rain. Pouring rain doesn't mean we have to stand under the shelter to avoid rain. Instead, we can enjoy the pouring rain as a blessing.

Avenger

Honestly, at first I'm not really into Avengers. Yup. I didn't get excited hearing Avengers will hit the theaters here.

Well, at least, untill a couple of weeks ago. I got my facebokok newsfeed filled with My friend's game status, @jesicastephanie. Also there's one tweet from her that so determined to stop play Avengers so she could concentrate at her thesis. Then, I got curious and tried to play Marvel's Avengers on facebook. Damn, she's right, the game is so addictive! Because of its game,  I became curious about its upcoming movie.

Then yesterday, when I was so focused on exercising, my friend from the church asked me and the others to watch it. Oh well, why not? I mean, since Friday's night is its premier, I'd bet the theaters would be so full of people who wants to watch Avengers so bad

PLOT (from imdb)
Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army.

My Thoughts
Seriously, I didn't have high expectation about Avengers. Since Iron Man, the following superhero movies disappointed me, starting from Iron Man 2 (padahal Iron Man pertamanya bagus bangett!!!), Thor, and Captain America (padahal di dalamnya ada Chris Evans!!!)

But after I watched it.... DAMN! It's so freaking AWESOME!!!!
What I love about this movie :

1. The got Colbie Smulders on it. That's a great start. Then, I love how each main actors plays their part being  a superhero, especially my three favorite actors, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo. I love the chemistry between three of them. Robert is so funny yet charming, Chris is such a gentleman, and Mark.. oh Mark, he's just adorable.

2. The plot story is so freaking awesome. I thought it would be another  movie about superheroes help each other, you know like that cartoon movie about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc became one team. But I forgot, we talking about Superheroes from Marvel, they got way plot story for their heroes (at leas for me XD). It turns out in this movie, all of the superheroes got involved in a quarrel between them. Ya masa di bagian pertama Thor udah berantem aja sama Iron Man. Hahaha.

3. The Humor. The humor factor is the important factor which made this movie isn't boring at all. And they have smart funny scene. Of course, some of them become funny because we got Oom Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, but there a lot of funny scenes, too. Even in the fight scene between Avengers and the enemy, we still can laugh. Salah satunya yang lucu :
-Thor: He's my brother
Natasha Romanoff: He killed 80 people in 2 days
Thor: ...He's adopted

-Loki: What have I to fear?
Tony Stark: The Avengers. It's what we call ourselves, sort of like a team. "Earth's Mighiest Heroes" type thing.
Loki: Yes, I've met them.
Tony Stark: Yeah, takes us a while to get any traction, I'll give you that one but, let's do a head count here. Your brother, the demi-god; a super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend; a man with breath-taking anger management issues; a couple of master assassins, and *you*, big fella, you've managed to piss off every single one of them.
Loki: That was the plan.
Tony Stark: Not a great plan. When they come, and they will, they'll come for you.
Loki: I have an army.
Tony Stark: We have a Hulk.
Loki: I thought the beast had wandered off.
Tony Stark: You're missing the point. There's no throne. There is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes and maybe it's too much for us but it's all on you. Because if we can't protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we'll avenge it.

4.The ultimate fight scene. It took like 30 minutes I guess, but it's not boring at all. This is the scene where I at last like Hawkeye. Haha.
5.And the last, but not the least is the special effect and graphic. Oh, damn! It so awesome. I really love that moving machine which can remove Star's Iron Man costume. So cool. The details are so well-made. And who can forget the alien creatures, they're yucky but yet so cool. The 'big fish' alien is so cute, too XD hahaha

Conclusion:
It's freaking awesome movie. You have to watch it  to believe it. If you a Marvel's fan, I think you won't be disappointed with this movie. It's an epic, funny, bad ass  superheroes mash-up movie XD

Mirror Mirror

Oh well.. let's talk about the movie..

THE PLOT
After a beloved King vanishes, his ruthless wife seizes control of the kingdom and keeps her beautiful 18-year-old stepdaughter, Snow White, hidden away in the palace. But when the princess attracts the attention of a charming and wealthy visiting prince, the jealous Queen banishes the girl to a nearby forest. Taken in by a band of rebellious but kindhearted dwarfs, Snow White blossoms into a brave young woman determined to save her country from the Queen. With the support of her new friends, she roars into action to reclaim her birthright and win back her Prince in this magical adventure comedy that will capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences the world over. (Relativity Media publicity )

My Thoughts
My first thought... yay! At last, I get to see Julia Roberts as a villain. And for me, she's done it so well. Still can't beat 'Once Upon A Time's version of The Queen, though.

It's an interesting fairy tale adaptation. I like it much better than the Disney version. Firstly, they pictured that the Queen loves to party and  spending money for

In this movie, Snow White's pictured without such fragility. At first, yeah I'm not into this character. Oh well, this is the typical gentle kind princess who's naive and weak. She even believed that she's not strong. Arrgh, so depressing.

But it all changed bit by bit when she run into the forest and met the dwarfs. at last didn't want to be the damsel in distress like those princesses she read from fairy tale. Not like the classic cartoon version, Snow White's willing to learn to be tougher and stronger. Also though she loved the prince, she didn't go weak when she fought him. While in the Disney version she was saved by everyone, in this version she saved all her friends and prince from the Queen.  She became a brave woman and willing to fight back the Queen. Snow is the one who beats the evil Queen with such coolness, not the animals in the forest like the cartoon does.

You might thought because I'm a hopeless romantic, I'll like the Prince character, right? Yeah, you are wrong.Though he's handsome, but I still don't like him. Yeah he's charming and kinda funny. Still, for me.. he's just too proud. That's why I was more than happy to see him under the puppy love spell.

My favorite scenes would be :
1) When The Mirror Spirit sent dolls to destroy The Dwarfs and Snow. It's kinda creepy and reminded me of those dark moment you usually saw in dark theme anime.
2) The ballroom dance scene.  Full of beautiful white gowns inspired by animals and I love the cute chat between The Prince and Snow White.
3) The wedding crash scene.Again full of interesting costumes.
4) The efforts to cure the Prince from the spell scene.
5) Scenes before Snow went to fight the Beast. I felt like a proud mama seeing her so brave :')

The scene I hate the most would be the Queen's beauty treatment. Arghh, it's so disgusting. No, I was okay and not disgusted by the snake or bird's poo. But, maggots??!! EUWWW!!!

The costumes are so awesome!!!!! So colourful, epic, and out of this world. Bravo for the late Ishioka Eiko-san. May she rest in peace.

Please do not leave right after the movie finished. You'd miss one of the highlights of  this fairy tale adaptation. What is that? The singing your heart out while dancing scene. Come on, it's still a princess movie. It won't complete without that, right? And it's not another usual singing scene. It's Bollywood dancing/singing scene! (*pasti karena sutradaranya orang India deh! hahaha)

Conclusion
I still found "Once Upon A Time"s version is more satisfying than this movie. I don't know  there's something missing in this story.

However, it's still a good movie to be watched.  The movie has interesting twists.  It has good message for kids. All things is possible if you just believe that you can do it.

7/10?

Sanubari Jakarta

Just watched "Sanubari Jakarta". Since I saw its movie posters on my local cinemas, I've been curious and waiting till this movie come. And today is the day.
The poster itself made me curious.

I won't talk much about how the plot was. You can find it here or 21cineplex. Basically,Sanubari Jakarta tells 10 short stories about 'Love'. Yeah, love melulu~ Hehehe, however, what intrigued me at the first place is  the whole stories are about LGBT relationship. Yep, 10 stories about love in Lesbian, Gay,Bisexual, and Transgender.

For me, it's not a simple stories. I have to blame Joko Anwar's exciting public lecture about symbolism in movie at my university years ago. I can't watch the movie like it is.  So many questions came out in my heads, like:
1.In the 1st story, they use red light to shoot the girl, while using blue one to shoot the boy. Why?
2.Why the director had to use one actress for 4 different characters in 'Pembalut'?
3. Especially in "Menunggu Warna." This made me question so many things. Why the guy has to wear dark apparels and his spouse wore bright--mostly white--apparel? It also makes me excited to see how they shot the gay couple decided to leave 'the religious society' with motorcycle so they can be together.  Or, how they shoot "Menunggu Warna" in black and white? What's the writer's intention? Do the writer wants to show us that we're living in a world that only see 'black and white'? Either it's straight or nothing at all. Or maybe the writer wants to show us the reality about how it will took a long time for our current society to give 'green light' for gay people the right to be together? Or may be it's simply wants to picture one man's waiting for green light to be lit so he could approach this one guy? See,how I  became questioning too much about one story?

I'm not a fan for all of the stories. What I like are:
1. "Malam Ini Aku Cantik" It's about a man who decided to be a transgender prostitute. His narration was so cool.

2. "Lumba-Lumba". It's about a bisexual mother who fell in love with her daughter's teacher.

3. Menunggu Warna. A story about a man's falling in love with another man while he's waiting for the red light in traffic light turnes into green. I love it so much, because it's sweet, touching, sad and there's so many things shown between the scenes. Plus, they don't need words to tell us a story.

4.Kentang. It's about a gay couple in one's kosan (dormitory, maybe?) room. Every time they're trying to make out, there are always things coming between them. I love it because it's so funny. I love whoever plays the 'woman' character. He's so cute~

5. Kotak Cokelat. At first I kinda confused about this story. So was the girl used to be a guy or simply used to be tomboy? Because if it's the second one, it will be too bad. I mean, sad but true, in our society, straight couple seems to be more acceptable and more likely to have happy ending in public's eye. Also if she's only used to be tomboy, this guy will be so shallow in my eyes.So he's okay with this girlfriend used to be tomboy  because now she's beautiful? SHALLOW! But after reading an article, it turns out that the girl used to be a boy. Good. So the guy's not shallow at all. He can face and accept his girlfriend's past. Not everyone can deal with it. This story give all LGBT people out there that there's a possibility of happy ending for them. :)

I have to be honest, because i'm not that of a thinker, there's confusions left  while watching stories like "1/2","Pembalut" and "Untuk A". The others.. well, it simply didn't touch my heart.

Overall, this is an interesting movie with unusual theme for Indonesian movies. But hey, it's way better than those 'what-so-called' Indonesian horror movies.  Even though there are sexual scene here and there, but it's not vulgar at all. They were just  gestures 'about to be done' or 'just finished'. Though it's a low-budget movie, this is one high quality Indonesian movie :D It shows us how LGBT life in Jakarta without being judgmental about it. So, I totally recommend it.

I like this movie. They give us so much variations. We can see the Lesbian and Gay stories from unrequited love theme until backstreet relationships. We can see the straight couple who can't be happy with their relationship and in fact they're bisexual. Oh, and that transgender theme. At first, I thought they only showed stories about people who being transgender just because  the situation made him to be one; or became one just so she can make a point to guys that woman can be awesome, too. It turned out there's a story because one feels he's been living in a wrong body and belongs to another sex, so he did something about it.

I really want to give this movie 10/10, but I can't.  Because there are some stories that I just didn't get. There's one story I found kinda  boring.  And also, some of the actors' acting skills need to be polished.  Lastly, I know they want to picture gay guys in reality, but why can't we have a really hot man played as a gay guy? Like, Dr.Christian Jessen gitu?
The hot Dr. Christian Jessen from Supersize vs Superskinny series. I wouldn't knew he's gay if he didn't mention it to the world. Oh well, but then, I had my suspicion, too.
Haha, okay, the last one's just a silly reason from my mind.

Hmm, oh well, this movie may not be  perfect, but I don't mind if there will be Sanubari Jakarta 2 in the future .So, I give this movie 8/10 :D

 My thoughts about LGBT

Before I give my opinion, I'd like to say that I'm  100% straight. Yes, I like man and I want to marry one.

But, I'm so pro with LGBT relationship. In fact, I always want to have a gay friend, like Sin in Bookends, Kurt in Glee, or Tom Levitt in Smash. I get annoyed when one of my cousins being so homophobic and looked so disgusted when we met a gay man. There are celebs I like who happen to be gay, like Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, the guys from Modern Family, and so on.

Okay, okay, I know my religion taught me that LGBT is wrong and also a sin.

So it's wrong, So it's a sin and against what God and society has taught us. However, we can't just point a finger, hate them, and force them to be straight again. What rights do we have? It's not like we're saints or has no sin at all so we can judge them.

Maybe it's because I'm a hopeless romantic. I believe that everyone deserves  true love. Everyone has the right to love whoever they want to. If they choose to be in love with somebody who has the same sex as theirs, well it's their decision and I just want to respect their choice (of course as long as it's because they really mean it. Not just for fun or having same sex relationship while they still have another relationship with another people).

What?Just because they're gay, so they're disgusting,or not precious, or like You-Know-Who that will kill you? Enggak kan? So have a little understanding and respect, people. :)

Super Duper Gotta Love Dr. Seuss' Lorax (2012)

After having dinner with my big sis, we randomly go to the movies. Yup. This time we watch Dr. Seuss' Lorax, the movie I've been waiting since I watched its trailer on Youtube.

PLOT
Ted (Zac Efron), a 12 years old boy, has a crush towards Audrey (Taylor Swift), who has a dream to see a real trees grow in Thneedville again.

Yup, real trees. Why? Because in Thneedville where they live, there are NO single tree grows. All of the vegetation are made by plastic, even bees. And for trees? Well, they have trees made by plastics or pretty much like street lamps, which you can change its leaves (lamp color) into spring, summer, autumn, or even Disco Ball theme.

Getting excited with Audrey statement that she probably will marry whoever bring the tree, Ted starts searching where he can find it. After a brief information by his granny (Betty White), Ted goes outside the village looking for Once-ler.

Once-let won't give the information about the last tree that easy. He demanded Ted to listen the stroy about him and Lorax, the grumpy spirits who once loves there, first. Then, he will give him the information.

Like that's not hard enought. Ted's effort to have a real tree also gets even tougher because Mr. O'hare, an air mogul, doesn't like Ted being outside Thneedville.

MY THOUGHT

So, before I watched its 2012 version, I decided to listen to the audio book version first. Then, weeks later, at last the movie came to Indonesia!!! Of course there are some different between the book and the movie. However, both still make me wanna shout "WAY TO GO DR. SEUSS!!!!This is one of brilliant stories Dr. Seuss has ever made."

What I like about the movie:
  1.  They didn't erase the rhyme storytelling. Even the dialogue that has rhyme session in a book are here, too. That's why I get so excited while watching the movie.
  2. They didn't erase the MAIN AND IMPORTANT SCENES. Unlike, Narnia 2, which they erase the most important scene (hiks).
  3. They add  new characters. Okay, when I first knew about this, I kinda mad and skeptical, too. I mean, as we all know, adding new characters to a movie based on book sometime will downgrade the movie. But, apparently ,not this one. Adding Mr. O'Hare turns out to be great. Well, at least for me. Why? Here's the thing, Mr. O'hare is a businessman who sells fresh air to Thneedville citizen. So it makes sense why up until the present no one even know the "real" world without tree. Also it adds the pressure for Ted whether he's willing enough to get the tree back to his village.
  4. The animation. Come on, it's bright, it has colorful scenes, it's fun, it's funny, and those bears and Lorax himself? !!!!They are so fluffy!!! I want to take them all to my house XD

Oh, of course about the story!!! I LOVE IT SO BAD!! The story is full of great messages. Like, keep your promise, don't take what's not yours, don't do harm for your personal advantage. Just think about how it affects other people before you ACT.

For my self, the main message is about preserving our environment, especially about "industrial logging". This story remind us what will happen if we let greedy industries chop our forest without planting the new one. Or worse,if we let ourselves not caring about the environment.

I felt uber sad when I watched the scene about Once-ler became greedy and listened to his family about chopping down the tree so they could be rich. The thing was he didn't realize what's the impact from what he and his industry's done. Trufulla trees are important for living creatures in that forest. Once the tree chopped, bears and birds have no home and food. The  industrial waste makes the fishes went miserable. And worse, it affects people in the future. People has to buy fresh air to be able to breath decently and a kid who got glowing by swimming in polluted air.

But, what I like about Once-ler is he felt remorse and regret of what he did. He wanted to make things right. This is one quality that's not possessed by some people.

Oh, there are memorable quotes, too:

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

“But now," says the Once-ler, "now that you're here, the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

“I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues.”
Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

“It's not about what it is, it's about what it can become.”
Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Conclusion
I still don't get it why this movie has an average rating on IMDB.

For me,this is an animation that has deep message, but not boring at all.  The animation is awesome. The creatures are uber cute and fluffy. The story has the right amount of everything: puppy love, humor, drama, seriousness, and again FUN. I laughed and almost cried during the movie, then came home with a smile after watching it. :)

I totally recommend this to be watched.

Joan Loves.... This Means War

THE PLOT
Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine) are best friends. They're both are TOP CIA agents. They're both are single and not in a relationship at the moment. FDR are the typical charismatic spy, like James Bond. You know live life the fullest and having fun with girls. While Tuck is a sweet divorced gentlemen who misses being in love. Then there's Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). She's a sconsumer products tester/reviewer who's also not been in the dating game for a while since she found out her guy cheated with a pilates instructor.

Lauren's friend,  Trish (Chelsea Handler),always encourages Lauren to move on by finding a boyfriend, not only date a guy. Seeing Lauren doesn't seem doing her best to find one, Trish put Lauren's profile on dating website.Meanwhile, Tuck also put his profile on the same dating website and got a first date with Lauren.

As a best friend, FDR offers to watch Tuck on date from afar, in case the date went disaster. So FDR waits in DVD store. There he met Lauren who just finished meet Tuck, but FDR doesn't now that she was Tuck's date yet. Attracted to her frank opinion about him, FDR decides to pursue Lauren.

The next day at the office, FDR and Tuck finally realized they like the same girl. FDR offers to back off from her because he's more experience than Tuck who hasn't been in dating game since divorced. Feeling underestimated by FDR, Tuck turns down the offers and wants to compete fair and square.

So the competition between 2 CIA agents to get a girl is begun. Using their ability as a man and as a spy , Tuck and FDR compete to be the best man for Lauren. So who'll get Lauren? The charming bad boy FDR or the British sweet gentleman Tuck?

MY THOUGHT

I love it,love it love it!!!!!!

At first I thought it will be the typical  spy movie with humor here and there.Thank goodness, I was wrong! This is such a cute hilarious romantic comedy movie. I laugh all the way through till  the end of the movie XD

So here are the reason why I love it:
1) I like Trish. Gue suka pas dia bilang ke Lauren untk enggak memilih "who's the better man". Instead, choose the man who can make you better a person. Aww~..

2) The efforts both men do to get to know her. Kocak lho! Anak buah mereka dimanfaatin buat nyari tahu tentang Lauren with CIA technology. But that's what makes this movie hilarious and i think guys viewer who watched it won't get bored, too.

3)Pas Lauren kencan sama Tuck di paintball field. Kocak parah! Enggak terima dibilang "safe dan ngebosenin", Tuck tries to impress her with showing off his ability too shoot and give some action in the field. At the end of the date, Lauren ga sengaja nembak Tuck's crotch with the paint gun. Just too hilarious.

4)The BOYS!! DUH~~~ I have to admit that the first reason I watched it because I want to see Chris Pine. But,at the end of the movie, I found myself fell in love it Tom Hardy's character. I mean, what's not to love? He's strong (no question about that). He's a gentleman with a sincere gestures. Moreover, he's British!

THE CONCLUSION
Honestly, it's like THE BACHELORETTE, but it's the better version. It's way funnier, way more action, and no cheesy scene what so ever.

It has gorgeous guys and comedy romantic plot for the girls. For the guys who's kind enough to watch it with the girls, don't worry. to get bored.  It also has sexy girls, awesome CIA spy technologies, and action scenes for you guys. Most importantly, it has funny scenes for all of the audiences, yang menurut gue lucu banget dan enggak maksa :)

So for all of hopeless romantics out there, I recommend this movie for you :D
